If x "doesn't equal" 0 and y "doesn't equal" 0, and x^2 + 2xy + y^2 = 0, which of the following could be the ratio of x to y? A. 1:1 B. 2 : 1 C. -1:1 D. Cannot be determined. Note... the "doesn't equal" means the = sign with the line through it, I believe it symbolizes that the two numbers aren't equal. There is no key for this feature. Also, we are learning how to choose "Cannot be determined" properly. So make sure 100% that you can't solve it, before answering cannot be determined! Thanks

that can mean only one thing. okay then; x^2 or y^2 aren't zero either - and they can't be negative either. is that okay with you?
(x^2 + y^2 + 2xy)_ is basically (x+y)^2 the best procedure now for you would be to substitute the 'ratio' values of 'x' and 'y' in the equation - and se if the equation reduces to zero.
