A substance is combusted in the presence of oxygen within a bomb calorimeter. Using the diagram provided below, determine change in enthalpy and the direction (if any) of heat transfer.

Combustion is an example of an exothermic process -- where heat is transferred from the system (bomb) to the the surroundings (water). So, the net result is that the enthalpy (total system energy) change of the substance in question will be negative.
