“What causes the sodium atom to be more reactive?

It has to do with the electrons in it's orbitals. Sodium only has 1 electron in it's 3s orbital (it's valence electron in this scenario). The nucleus attraction to the valence electron is weaker than that of a nucleus which has more valence electrons. Therefore molecules or atoms with more valence electrons will react with it. I hope my rambling makes sense.
