when gas formed reacting metal sulphides with dil. H2SO4 is passed into Cl2 water gives
What do you think about the nature of the intermediate gas formed?
I am really poor in chemistry... Is SO2 released as intermediate gas?
No it's not. The first reaction is an acid base reaction. Let's say the metal is zinc. So ZnS is made up of zinc ions \(Zn^{2+}\) and sulfide ions \(S^{2-}\). \(S^{2-}\) is a (double) base that will react with sulfuric acid. That should help you find the gas (smelling of rotten eggs and toxic).
H2S ?
Yep! Now, the second reaction is a redox reaction. Chlorine is an oxidising agent and hydrogen sulfide a reducing agent.
so, finally is HCl formed? what happens to S? Does it oxidize to free S2 or something like that?
I think it will oxidate to solid sulfur. \(H_2S \rightarrow S+2H^++2e^- \)
what is the final answer? is it HCl? But HCl is not in the list of options..
It should be colloidal sulphur.. i guess.. It is in the list of options..
Correct: colloidal sulfur is a very divided form of solid sulfur.
thanks! and HCl is formed as byproduct.. right?
Yes.
