molar mass of Chlorine = 35.5 When there is one Chlorine, molar mass of metal = 74.5 - 35.5 = 39 (quite make sense to me...) Probably it's Potassium Important note: I suck at Chemistry

the valency of chlorine is 1.. that rules out option A and B.. now, if its D, two chlorine atoms would make 35.5*2=71 gm and no metal can be 74.1-71=3.5 gm.. So, the one which makes sense is option C

I just guess it's K after knowing its molar mass. As @ujjwal said, when there are 2 chloride ions, the molar mass of the metal becomes 74.5 - 35.5 = 3.5 (which doesn't make sense..) So, we can neglect the option D.

If it is Y2, molar mass of Y = 39/5 = 19.5 (more like a non-metal in this case) Similar case for the option Y3

Sorry.. I don't know if this method works... In this case, it seems to work okay. But what about when the molar mass of metal chloride = 95.3?

yeah but then it should be like XCl2 just like CaCl2

Yup... It's MgCl2 ... If you can work out the answer using your method, then go~ Use your method then :)
