I have heard that in solids, atoms are held very closely by strong intermolecular forces. But why in this crystalline solids image atoms are held so far apart? Please help:)

I'm not the one to ask for this. I just barely passed high school chemistry :/

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

don't worry about it.

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

Can you give a source of this image? There is always the generic answer that every substance has its optimal structure, which may or may not look "right" according to basic theory. I suspect that the large dots and the branches are different substances, and that this is a heterogeneous mixture, maybe?

The source website http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022309305000025 says, "Note that these planes link SiO4 tetrahedra that form the corrugated layers, separated by planes rich in Li+ ions (spheres)". The abstract also mentions phrases like amorphous, and glasses - this is a tipoff that the structure is likely to be irregular.

k! I got this. thanx:)
