What is the oxidation number of sulfur (S) in sulfuric acid (H2SO4)? -6 +2 +4 +6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I put 4

OpenStudy (btaylor):

It is +6. Each H is +1 (total of +2), and each O is -2 (total of -8). It needs to equal zero, so only +6 will work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could I have just added 4 and 2? I haven't done this in so long so i forgot. -.-

OpenStudy (btaylor):

Not really. Because then you'd be forced to choose between +6 and -6.

oh trueee
