The following data set consists of 19 values. The mean of the data set is 34, and the standard deviation is 10. 19, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 30, 33, 33, 34, 38, 39, 41, 43, 45, 48, 48, 50 Which of the following actions will increase the standard deviation by the greatest amount?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. Add the values 14, 14, and 14 to the data set for a total of 22 observations. B. Add the value 14 to the data set for a total of 20 observations. C. Add the values 0 and 1 to the data set for a total of 21 observations. D. Add the values 13 and 35 to the data set for a total of 21 observations. E. Add the values 41 and 42 to the data set for a total of 21 observations.

what are the steps to this one.

OpenStudy (eyust707):

the most extreme values will change the s.d. most drastically

OpenStudy (eyust707):

not 100 percent sure now that i think about it but I believe it is actually C

OpenStudy (eyust707):

if you have data that is very spread out.. if there are values that range over a large set of number the SD will be large

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (eyust707):

if you have data that is precise and doesnt range over a large set of number.. ie all the number are very close.. the SD will be very small

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it,thanks.

OpenStudy (eyust707):

yep np
