Let's look at the basic equation of an electric field and determine which variables effect the strength. From Coulomb's Law, the electric field strength is defined as\[\vec E = {Q \over 4 \pi \epsilon_o} {\vec r \over r^2}\] Let's break the equation up. \(Q\) is the electric charge that is generating the electric field \(4 \pi \epsilon_o\) is a constant. You may have seen \(1 \over 4 \pi \epsilon_o\) represented as \(k_e\) \(\vec r\) is the unit vector from the point charge \(Q\) to the point in space where we are measuring the electric field. \(r^2\) is the distance between the point charge Q and the point in space where we are measuring the electric field. If we fix the point in space where the electric field is being measured, that is to say that \(\vec r\) and \(r^2\) are held constant, an electric field can be strengthened by increasing the charge \(Q\).
