define isotopes

OpenStudy (btaylor):

Isotopes are the same element (they have the same number of protons), but have differing numbers of protons. Ex: Carbon-12 vs. Carbon-14. Both have 6 protons, but C-12 has 6 neutrons, while C-14 has 8 neutrons.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons; the different possible versions of each element are called isotopes! hope that helped
