Matt bought an outdoor wall light fixture. The fixture has semicircular ends at the top and bottom as shown. The side of the fixture that faces the wall is open. A light fixture shaped as a half cylinder with a diameter of 8 inches and height of 14 inches. What is the exterior surface area of the light fixture? 44π in2 56 in2 72π in2 105π in2

OpenStudy (btaylor):

surface area of the semi-circles: A = π r^2 (r=4) surface area of the curved side: A=(π)(r)(h) (r=4, h=14) then add it all together.

=224pi

im confused!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A = π r^2 A = π 4^2 A = 16π So the area of the semi circle top and bottom combine is 16π sq inches ---------------------------- A = π*r*h A = π*4*14 A = 56π and the area of the curved (lateral) surface is 56π

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Now add the two areas: 16π + 56π = 72π

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So the answer is 72π
