The total charge on a molecule must be equal to the sum of the positive and negative ions, and must also equal zero. If there are 2 Y ions, and each of them is a -2 charge, that means a total of -4 charge. There is only 1 X ion present in the formula, that 1 ion must possess a +4 charge to make the molecule have a net charge of zero.
