Electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus (protons and neutrons) of an atom. The are very small, even compared to the protons and neutrons and thus move at very high speeds around the nucleus. Electrons are the parts of atoms that allow for interactions with other atoms to occur, such as forming a covalent bond. A good example of their biological importance can be seen in the electron transport chain, used to produce ATP. Molecules in this chain gain (reduction) and lose (oxidation) electrons in a sequential order that allows for an energy gradient to be formed which is then used to produce ATP.
