divide x^5-x^4+x^3+2x^2-x+4 by x^3+1 using long division

Well, the first term is obviously x^2. Multiply x^3 + 1 by x^2 and subtract it from your polynomial. What do you get?

Well...here is my problem I realize it is x^2 so then you multiply by (x^3 +1) and get x^5+ x^2 but what I dont is how you line them up I guess do you leave a blank spot under x^4 and x^3?

Yes, those are blank as \[ x^5 + x^2 = x^5 + 0x^4 + 0x^3 + x^2 \]

Ohh okay. Thank you! Then you do continue, after you subtract, with -x^4?

Yes, then you will want -x times x^3 + 1, etc.
