How do I know if copper(II) is the positive or negative ion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

copper is a metal and it is always positive, some rare metals can have negative ions (anions) cause they can more easily release electrons than recieve them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks. So all Metals with numbers are taken as positive ions? What about non-metals and metalloids?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all metals are positive yes, and metalloids can more easily have negative ions cause their electronegativity is greater than those of metals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if I would have a metalloid with a number, how would i know if it's an anion or cation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you assume it is a cation cause cations are those who are written with roman numbers like copper (II) sulphate ... cause cations are those who dyrect anions and ligands...

Thankyou so much!
