OpenStudy (rishabh.mission):

what is the colour of light absorbed by an aq sol. of CuSO4 ?

mathslover (mathslover):

Sol. CuSO4 will be absorbing orange-red colour & hence will be of blue colour. source : http://onlineindiaeducation.com/iitchem1.pdf

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Colored compounds are colored because of the absorption of visible radiation. The color is a result of the compound absorbing a certain color of light, leading to the perception of the compound being the complimentary color. For example, if white light passes through a test tube containing a solution of copper (II) sulfate (CuSO\(_4\)), the solution will be blue because the Cu\(^{2+}\) ions strongly absorb “orange” photons of light (photons of light with λ ~ 600 nm)." source: https://eee.uci.edu/programs/gchem/RDGVISSpec.pdf I highly recommend you read that PDF, it will help your understanding of the concept greatly and potentially answer your additional questions if you have some :-)

mathslover (mathslover):

this question is of IIT JEE Paper 1 chemistry

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

yes, and answer is orange. color absorbed is opposite to the color emitted. 'opposite'? use this ---> :P|dw:1341333697288:dw| You can see the VIBGYOR pie-platter here. So helps?
