You could even extend this to R^3 or even R^n, and hence, we'll get multivariable calculus, where you differentiate or integrate with respect to one variable, such as x, while other variables like y and z are present. Yeah, lgbasallote defined the differentiation part of it... In fact, although Leibnez and Newton discovered/developed calculus, each had their own different notation. Hence you have the notation f'(x), which basically means the same thing as dy/dx
