Total surface of cone with a base = (pi)r^2 + (pi)rL , where r is the radius and L is the slant height of the cone. The lateral area is the total area minus the area of the base, i.e the top of the cone. So in this case, just use (pi)rL to solve the problem since there isn't a base anyway.

r = 12/2 = 6
Lateral area = (3.14) x 6 x 8
= 150.72sqft
