What quantum numbers specify these subshells?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4s n = ? l = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand your question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it give me 4s 4p 5d and it ask for n=? and l= ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of each

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is N for nitrogen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no N would be 2p3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these deal with Orbitals and Quantum numbers...not Nitrogen =.=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well an s orbital can hold 2 electrons, a p orbital can hold 6 and a D orbital can hold 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so what's the value for n and l ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure i hvae never had to figure out a term for n or i. If you could tell me what they want for those values I will do my best to figure it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure either...they gave me those subscript 4s,4p and 5d and gave me some boxes to input answers for n and l (L) btw: n:principal quantum number l: angular momentum quantum number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i believe n = 4 for them all because when you go into the d orbital you subtract one line from it. I still am not sure about L yet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then it should be 0 for the s orbital, 1 for the p orbital, and 2 for the d orbital

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't get it :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok for the sake of guessing, i've got it right lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it seems like n= 4,4,5 and l= 0,1,2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how is it 0,1,2 is what i don't get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok then in is just the first number in the shell, those numbers are fixed with s being zero, p being 1, and d being 2, f is 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh, so it goes in order from s,p,d,f i guess?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok for next question it asking for Be, what is n,l,ml,ms of Be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it's in the 2s2 shell so n=2, l=0 not sure of the rest of them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how you know it's 2 and 0 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because s=0,p=1,d=2,f=3 and n is just the first number that comes up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm it gave me a bunch of choices, and told me that I should pick 4 answers out of those choices since Be have 4 electrons. But i only see 3 answers have n=2 and l=0
