explain redox reduction and give one example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions include all chemical reactions in which atoms have their oxidation state changed. This can be either a simple redox process, such as the oxidation of carbon to yield carbon dioxide (CO2) or the reduction of carbon by hydrogen to yield methane (CH4), or a complex process such as the oxidation of glucose (C6H12O6) in the human body through a series of complex electron transfer processes

Although oxidation reactions are commonly associated with the formation of oxides from oxygen molecules, these are only specific examples of a more general concept of reactions involving electron transfer. u can see here more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redox

any doubt abt this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

redox - Reduction and Oxidation occur when there are both reduction and oxidation occurs in the reaction. how do we know? 1.Change in oxidation number Mg + CuSO4 -> MgSO4 + Cu (Mg displaces copper, changes it oxidation number from 0 to 2+ *oxidation) (Cu is displaced, changing its oxidation number from 2+ to 0 *reduction ) 2.transfer of electrons from above equation, the ionic equation is Mg + Cu2+ ---> Mg2+ + Cu i will post more, :) need to check my book. :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i forgot to explain. the Mg atom ionizes by releasing 2 electrons to form Mg2+, so the Magnesium is oxidised. the magnesium is the reducing agent. the Copper ions arre discharged, by accepting 2 electrons from the magnesium. the copper ions are reduced to copper. copper ions are the oxidising agent. hope this helps. :)
