SO4 2- is a direct violation of the octet rule. but why is it allowed?

Because sulfur is a Period 3 element, and has 3d orbitals available to make additional molecular orbitals. In Period 2 the 3d orbitals are too high in energy to participate in bonding, so Period 2 elements, like oxygen, are restricted to a valence octet.
