The heights in inches for five student are: 60, 67, 64, 54, 58 How would the median change if a student 68 inches tall is added to the group?
ok we first arrange them in ascending order
54,58,60,64,67 since there are 5 numbers, median is middle value
the median without 68 would be 60... so add a number and what would your median be?
middle value is 60
now we add 68
68 would be the 6th number in the list as it is the largest of all
now there are 6 numbers which is even...so to find the median we have to take the average of the two middle values
for the median with all those number their is two middle numbers, 60 and 64 so what is the median?
the two middle values here are 60 and 64....their average is (60 +64)/2
that is 124 /2 that is 62
so when u add 68 to the list the median changes from 60 to 62
do u understand? @sandyjayaram is correct
60, 67, 64, 54, 58 add 68 median before the new value is 60 yes median after the new value depends on the definition of median but the answers above confuse mean and median, I believe.
Oh you are right. sorry
for an even number of values, you form the average of the two central values in the list.
should've read the whole thread. sorry guys
54,58,60,64,67: the median of this is 60 cuz its the middle number 54,58,60,64,67,68:the median of this one is the two middle numbers added together and divided by 2= your answer is 62
you guys are awsome:) i really do appreciate this:)
np :)
you are welcome :)
