A satellite sends signals from space to the regions which lie within the shaded portion of the Earth, as shown below. If the radius of Earth is approximately 6000 kilometers, the part of Earth which receives signals from the satellite has an area of ________ square kilometers. Use π = 3.14.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hartnn (hartnn):

part of earth=length of arc=r*theta r=6000km theta=608pi/180=pi/3 just plug in values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think she's quite there yet

hartnn (hartnn):

maybe waiting for you @panlac01 :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 10.13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let us break this down: you were given a circumference of 6000 km now can you write down the circumference formula of a circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2Pi*r

hartnn (hartnn):

but radius is 6000 not circumference.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha word, you're right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

forget what I said prior and let us start over

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hartnn said pi/3 now don't get this confused with 3.14 divided by 3

hartnn (hartnn):

but it is 3.14 divided by 3!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im getting confused -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry cemantha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=/

hartnn (hartnn):

sorry!i will leave this to @panlac01

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its ok @hartnn its js he's saying one thing and my problem is saying another

hartnn (hartnn):

so did u find the length of arc using the 1st formula i gave??10.13 is incorrect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let me recheck

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i got 10.6=1.046

hartnn (hartnn):

let me do it here: length of arc=radius*theta radius=6000 theta=pi/3=3.14/3 so,length of arc=6000*3.14/3 =2000*3.14 =6280

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

hartnn (hartnn):

still any doubts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm sorta bc before yu put r=6000km theta=608pi/180=pi/3 and now yu put radius=6000 theta=pi/3=3.14/3 so,length of arc=6000*3.14/3 =2000*3.14 =6280

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you understand what he's typing about, cemantha?

hartnn (hartnn):

that 608 was typo...for 60* now both are same...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooooooooooooh ok.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can that be solved by \[A=\pi r^2\] and then divide it by 6?

hartnn (hartnn):

but isn't the part of Earth only arc AB?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that value is 60 deg. and a whole circle is 6x60 deg
