Say we have a formula for a compound di hydrogen monoxide \[H_2O\] the two is because for ever molecule there are two Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom
to make hydrogen monoxide we can burn Hydrogen gas in Oxygen both Hydrogen and oxygen are diatomic (two atoms in per molecule) \[H_2+O_2\rightarrow H_2O\]
however we notice the equation is not balanced,
balancing the reactants and products 's number of atoms per reaction we find \[2{H_2}_{(\text g)}+{O_2}_{(\text g)}\rightarrow 2{H_2O}_{(\text g)}\] that twice the number of molecules of Hydrogen as Oxygen are needed
gasses of the same T,P,V, will have the same number of atoms per unit volume , a standard mole of gas will always occupy around 24L at STP
the stoichiometric numbers are these ones \[\color{red}2{H_2}_{(\text g)}+\color{red}1{O_2}_{(\text g)}\rightarrow \color{red}2{H_2O}_{(\text g)}\], they express not only the ratio of the reactants and products in molecules per reaction but this is also the same ratio of moles of each species in the reaction,
