How is CCl4 non polar? it has a tetrahedral shape but the bonds dont cancel out each other to be non polar though...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is CCl4 non polar?? it has tetahedron but the Cl cancel out each other leaving C, thus it is unsymmetrical and therefore causing the whole structure to be polar :)

OpenStudy (callisto):

CCl4 is non polar as the dipole moment cancel out due to it's shape and electronegativity. |dw:1346166522724:dw|

OpenStudy (callisto):

|dw:1346166616205:dw| Regular tetrahedral shape + forces all pointing outwards => dipole moment cancels out => no net dipole moment => non polar
