The number of valence electrons is 1-8 respectively, group I will have 1 valence electron so it wants to lose it (and become a +1 charged ion) in order to get a full octet, group II will have 2 valence electrons so it wants to lose them (and become a +2 charged ion) in order to get a full octet. group IV has 4 valence electrons so is can lose them or gain 4 more (and become +4 or -4 charged ion) in order to get a full octet. groups V to VII will want to gain electrons in order to get full octet. group VIII already has full octet so they will not form ions.
