In a US household, the voltage in an electric outlet (in volts) is given by the following equation, where t is in seconds. V = 156sin(120πt) However, in a European house, the voltage is given (in the same units) by the following equation. V = 339sin(100πt) Answer the following questions comparing the voltages in the two regions. (a) How much greater is the maximum voltage in a European house than a US house? __________volts (b) What is the number of cycles (oscillations) per second in a US house? _________cycles/second

Didn't we do this before?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It didnt get explained though!

What is the greatest value of sine?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, what are the greatest voltages in either case?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

156(1) and 339(1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

156 and 339?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. It's that easy. Now for the cyclical frequency. There are 2*pi Hz in a revolution there. So in the USA, if the cyclical frequency is 120(pi), what are the Hz? (120pi / 2pi)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep, 60Hz (or 60 oscillations/sec)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks man!
