Whats the mass of 1 mole of Oxygen gas?

OpenStudy (hanah):

The mass of one mole of oxygen atom is about 16 grams ,oxygen gas exist as a molecule (O2) so 1 mole of (O2) is 32 grams

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank u

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

\[Moles = \frac{Grams}{Molecular Mass}\]

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

1mole of oxygen = x grams/15.9994 1mole * 15.9994 = x x = 15.9994g

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Molecular mass of oxygen being 15.9994 (look it up on periodic table)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now wat about 20 moles of carbon monoxide

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Carbon monoxide has the molecular formula CO So Molecular formula = 12.0107g/mol + 15.9994g/mole plug into formula I posted above along with 20mole and solve for grams

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Sorry: Molecular Mass = 12.0107g/mol + 15.9994g/mole

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright its gud thanks

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

the answer is about 560g

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea thanks

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

alright... no... problem

I have a doubt on chmistry ; how can we calculate the mass of 1 ion of oxygen?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

There are many ways of accomplishing this, originally they used gasses Avogadro determined that the volume of a gas is proportional to the number of atoms at specific temperatures and pressures (which could both be measured). From this property they could figure out relative masses of specific elements (lead to the discovery of avagadros number). http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-was-avogadros-number/ Current methods are mass spectroscopy, but there are many other instrumental methods to determine the masses of single atoms and fundamental particles. I feel like it is foolish to doubt such knowledge at this point considering it has become so fundamental to our daily lives. I mean you wouldn't even be able to ask me this because computers would not be able to exist as we know them if we did not have this knowledge. See this comic: http://xkcd.com/154/ Keep being inquisitive though it is a good thing.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Really the proof for such stuff has been observed so frequently it is undoubtably fact.
