Data Set B: Speeds Recorded by the State Police 53, 55, 55, 55, 57, 57, 60, 60, 62, 63, 63, 64, 67, 68, 68, 70, 72, 73 Find the mean speed of Data Set B.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

add all the terms together then divide by the numer of terms

OpenStudy (amistre64):

subtract 60 from all the terms, then add up the results and divide by how many there are .. then add 60 back to it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't get what you saying. @amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if the numbers seem to large, you can subtract an arbitrary amount from them to make them more managable. Numbers closer to zero are easier to deal with mentally than larger values

OpenStudy (amistre64):

since the mean of a set is just a point within the interval, the mean of the smaller set is offset by the same value that you adjusted all the other points by

OpenStudy (amistre64):

{53, 55, 55, 55, 57, 57, 60, 60, 62, 63, 63, 64, 67, 68, 68, 70, 72, 73}-60 {-7, -5, -5, -5, -3, -3, 0, 0, 2, 3, 3, 4, 7, 8, 8, 10, 12, 13}

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we can even eliminate a lot of the values now sine they zero each other out {-5, 2, 4, 8, 8, 12, 13}

OpenStudy (amistre64):

17,12,13 = 42 42/18 + 60 would be the mean

OpenStudy (amistre64):

... assuming a did the head math correctly :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Is there a reason why you simply moved on to another question ?
