Does anyone know why the volume of an ethanol and water solution increase when heated?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when heated, the hydrogen bonds between water and ethanol molecules are getting weaker, causing greater distance between the molecules. this is translated to a larger volume of the solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay, that makes sense. Thank you so much. So they are getting weaker because of the heat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, they get more energy by the heat and the molecules vibrate rapidly so they can't stay close to other molecules.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so i can relate that to the particle theory.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am not quite sure... you can relate it to the thermodynamical theory for sure... I'm not sure it's related to repulsion of electron clouds.

Okay, all good. Thank you so much for you'r help.
