\[i\] is clearly current
\[e^{(– b + ia) } = (3 ± \sqrt{8} ) e^{i(π/ 2 + 2nπ)}\]
i get why a = pi/2 but why does b = 3+/-sqrt(8)

not sure what you're trying to do here...
did you mean \[b=-\ln|3 \pm \sqrt{8}|\]
introducing ln we get \[-b+ia=\ln(3+\sqrt{8})+i(\pi/2+2\pi*r)\] the part inside cant be - cos ln is >0
oh wait \[\sqrt{8}<3\]
