HELP!! im studying for my chem exam.. How does CuSO4 --become--> copper(II)sulfate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

naming binary ionic compounds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isn't CuSO4 already copper (ii) sulfate? It's made up of the ions Cu2+ and (SO4)2-

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

Cu means copper S means Sulfur O means oxygen SO4 means sulfate so CuSO4 means copper sulfate it becomes copper (II) because the charge of copper is sulfate (it was cancelled because the charge of sulfate is also 2- so if you criss cross, they cancel) does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cuso4 is copper(II) sulphate. cu valency is 2+ and sulphate valency is 2-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhh okay so the initial was Cu(SO4)^2+and once balanced it goes to Cu(II)Sulfate4 @koopineapple

All these responses were a very big help!

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

ahh yes that was what i mean...charge of copper is 2...which is same as sulfate so they cancelled
