Styrofoam has a density of 300kg/m3 . What is the maximum mass that can hang without sinking from a 30.0m -diameter Styrofoam sphere in waterAssume the volume of the mass is negligible compared to that of the sphere.

r u here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first we have to know maximum density after which substance sink in water

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

?

OpenStudy (eyust707):

The total mass of the styrofoam and hanging mass can be equal to as much as the weight of the water displaced.

the final answer

OpenStudy (eyust707):

Figure out what the volume of the styrofoam is. Then, using the density of water, calculate the mass of that same volume of water. Use the density of the styrofoam and it's volume to calculate the mass of the sytrofoam ball. Then Use this equation: Mass of water displaced = Mass of styrofoam + hanging mass
