The question probably means -simplify the following roots. The thing you want to look for in these problems, is - Does my number have a FACTOR that is a perfect square? Perfect squares are these numbers - 4, 9, 16, 25, 36 and so on... because - 2^2=4, 3^2=9... and so on :D So does 8 break down into any perfect squares? Well the only one we can check for is the number 4, since all other perfect squares are too large. Does 4 go into 8 evenly? :)

So we can rewrite it like this\[\sqrt{8}=\sqrt{4*2}=\sqrt{4}\sqrt{2}=2\sqrt{2}\] Make sense? :) Try to do something similar with the 12.
