OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

why is \(CH_3 CH_2 Br\) soluble in kerosene?

OpenStudy (raspberryjam):

Like dissolves like. Polar molecules will dissolve in polar solvents. In this case kerosene is a hydrocarbon which makes it polar since it contains -OH groups. The Br in CH3CH2Br makes it polar as well.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

why is that compound polar? is it because of the lewis structure?

OpenStudy (raspberryjam):

Bromine is more electronegative so it draws the electrons towards its side which gives it a charge.

OpenStudy (raspberryjam):

And by more electronegative I mean in comparison to carbon

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

hmm yes that makes sense. thanks
