how do you factor out a polynomial expression that has fractions? : f(x)=1/2x^2+5/2x-3

Same as usual, but it might be easier to see by first changing all the coefficients to equivalent fractions of a common denominator.

you can also multiply the whole equation by 2.

Multiplying by 2 may disguise the fact that 1/2 is still a factor.

made it easier for me because everything became a whole number, just have to remember to divide by 2 in the end

Yep, it's a great way to clear the fractions, but I've seen many students forget that the 1/2 is still a factor; just a matter of being careful. ;-)
