Find the probability of selecting 2 people at random who were born in the same month

OpenStudy (nottim):

within what range? there's high possibility in a group of 25 people

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The probability is 1/12. Say you choose 2 people: person A and person B If person A was born in october for example, then person B has 12 months to choose from in terms of which month s/he was born in. Only one month will match with person's A month of birth. So that's why the probability is 1/12.

He's exactly right There are 12 months in one year and randomly you chose one month so therefore the chances are 1/12. But since there are two people person A has a probability of 1/12 and person B has probability of 1/12.To find out the probability that both are both in the same month multiply the two probabilities and you get 1/144. so therefore answer is 1 out 144 chances there born in the same month! Hope I helped :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no, it's just 1/12, not 1/144
