Can you help me determine the ionic characteristics of this element? How many electrons can chlorine donate? I thought +1 How many electrons can chlorine receive? -1? Valence: -1

Help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay im not sure about the donation but yur right on the recieving. the valence? what are you asking there?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

you have it backwards.. Cl has a valence of 7.. that means 7 electrons on it's "outermost shell" thus Cl can receive 1 electron in order to have the same electronic configuration as Ar (which is something all atoms wanna do, "octet rule") Chlorine can also give up electrons, although this process in VERY unfavoured (very high ionization energy).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

ps +1 means the atom LOST an electron, while -1 means it gained. this confusion is due to the negative charge on electrons.
