Which of the following is a characteristic of an ionic compound? It can be a solid, liquid or gas. It has a low melting point. It is made of a metal and a nonmetal. It is formed when atoms share electrons.
gabyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALEX
Let's start with an example of an ionic compound: NaCl Is this a solid, liquid, or gas? What do you think the melting point of table salt is? Is Na a metal or non-metal? Is Cl a metal or non-metal? Are these two ion's sharing electrons or did Na steal an electron from Cl?
@eashmore i have nl clue LOL
Let's think it through. We know table salt is a solid. Let's hold off on eliminating this as a possibility just yet. Table salt has a high melting point compared to water (which is a covalently bonded compound). (800C for NaCl, 100C for H2O). Let's rule this option out as a possible answer. Look at the periodic table. You know that metals are on the far left (Groups I and II), and non-metals are on the far right (excluding Group XIII which is the noble gases). Which side of the periodic table is Na located? Which side is Cl located?
which do you think is the answer and why?
@eashmore
I want you to answer that question. I know the answer and I'm not one to give it out without a little effort on your end.
lol its a pretest and idk anything of this
