Some compounds dissolve in others, and it depends on what ions they can dissociate into, but WHY does it depend on the ions--can someone elaborate on why some compounds are soluble in water and some not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solubility has a lot to do with the IMF's assoicated with the given compound. A clasic example is when you attempt to mix oil and water. The two don't mix and will naturally move away from each other forming different layers. this happens for a few reasons such as poliarity, and density.

What is an IMF?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

intermolecular forces
