P4 + KClO3 ---> KCl + P2O5 Can anyone explain to me how to balance this equation please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should i give u the answer directly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i have the answer i just can't figure out how to do it

OpenStudy (aaronq):

it's basically trial and error, start off by looking at what you have and write it down left side: 4 P right side: 2 P so add coefficients where appropriate you have to play around with this stuff, theres no secret equation to give you results. Make you sure keep track of everything and you should be okay

OpenStudy (aaronq):

if you inspect, the only thing that is problematic are the oxygens, since they're in weird ratios, this is where your knowledge of multiplication tables comes in to find common factors

OpenStudy (aaronq):

P4 + KClO3 ---> KCl + P2O5 balance the oxygens.. P4 + 5KClO3 ---> KCl + 3P2O5 now balance the KCl P4 + 5KClO3 ---> 5KCl + 3P2O5 now balance the Phosphorous 3/2P4 + 5KClO3 ---> 5KCl + 3P2O5 since you end up with a fraction, multiply everything by 2 to get rid of it 3P4 + 10KClO3 ---> 10KCl + 6P2O5

this was a big help! thank you so much!
