Manganese has a total of 25 electrons, but the following orbital notation for manganese is incorrect. Explain the error in terms of the rules for electron arrangements.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just want to make sure my answers are correct and that they make sense...

OpenStudy (phi):

I don't know this stuff without googling it. As for the sentence, this sounds better: An atom is more stable if 4s is filled before 3d.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I also have this one: Describe at least two experiments, including the observed results, that caused the scientific community to accept changes to Dalton’s original model of the atom. 1. Thomson's Cathode Ray experiment: Split atoms into elections and ions. 2. Rutherford's Gold Foil experiment: Found the nucleus. John Dalton's theory that atoms are indivisible had to be changed because of Thomson's discovery of the electron. Thomson discovered that the rays in his experiment consisted of negatively charged particles (electrons). Due to the fact that electrons are so small, he believed that they could only found inside of the atom.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I changed it after I posted it to... The atom would be more stable if 4s was to be filled before 3d.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thanks anyways, i appreciate any help I can get! :)

OpenStudy (phi):

this doesn't read well The atom would be more stable if 4s was to be filled before 3d. better: The atom would be more stable if 4s were filled before 3d. best: The atom is more stable when 4s is filled before 3d.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, ill go with that! thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any opinions on the others?

OpenStudy (phi):

For Describe at least two experiments, including the observed results, that caused the scientific community to accept changes to Dalton’s original model of the atom. I don't know how much detail they want, but I would add more (only because when I read it, not remembering any of this) I don't get much info out of your description. What is Dalton's model? Maybe one or two sentences. Maybe a sentence or two for each experiment would be helpful. Pretend you are explaining it to someone who never heard of it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, could u wait until I write it so u could review it again?

OpenStudy (phi):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still writing...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is what I have so far, not done yet though: John Dalton's theory suggested that matter consists of indivisible particles called atoms and that atoms of a given element are all identical and can neither be created nor destroyed. Compounds are formed by combination of atoms in simple ratios to give compound atoms (molecules). This had to be changed because of Thomson's discovery of the electron. Thomson discovered that the rays in his Cathode Ray experiment consisted of negatively charged particles (electrons). Due to the fact that electrons are so small, he believed that they could only found inside of the atom. Rutherford's discovery showed that most of an atom is empty space and the mass of an atom is mainly carried in the nucleus. He proved this as most of the particles passed through the gold foil in his experiment. However, some were deflected by hitting the positively charged nucleus.

OpenStudy (phi):

he believed that they could only *be* found inside of the atom. fixed typo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for that! :) i'm trying to explain both of their experiment without making it a long essay... sorry if i'm taking to long lol

OpenStudy (phi):

Sounds good. But maybe tweak This had to be changed because ... to The idea of an indivisible atom had to be modified because....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thomson discovered that atoms are able to be cut while studying the rays traveling between charged metal plates in a vacuum tube. He discovered that the rays were consisted of negatively charged particles.

OpenStudy (phi):

Yes, that is plenty of detail

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the last sentence, I think I wan to re-word it to this: Thomson believed that these electrons could only be found in the nucleus because they are so small

OpenStudy (phi):

I woud not put because they are so small at the end (it makes it sound like the nucleus is too small). But Thomson did not know about the nucleus, so I would say atom. Thomson believed that because these electrons were so small, they could only be part of an atom.

OpenStudy (phi):

Add one summary sentence These results showed that Dalton's indivisible atom had internal parts, and that the atom was divisible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at the end right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I put it right after "However, some were deflected by hitting the positively charged nucleus."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

literally at the very end...

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, it helps to summarize why you are telling someone all this stuff (in case they weren't listening)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol okay, thanks so much for ur help! I really appreciate it! :)

OpenStudy (phi):

cya later...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bye! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks again!
