OpenStudy (allieatthedisco):

Why are halogens and alkali metals likely to form ions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because alkali metal are missing 7 electrons to have the octahedron config and halogens are missing only one electron to have octahedron config, so its really easy for them to give an electron or take an electron

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They have to form an octet in order to be 'complete'. In other words they want to be like Neon, argon or the other Noble gases
