Use the concept of ionization energy to explain why sodium form a 1+ ion (Na+) but magnesium forms a 2+ ion (Mg2+).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

valence electrons, look at your periodic table, to ionize sodium you need to remove 1 electron in order for it have an "octet" (eight) of electrons while magnesium you need to ionize 2 of its electrons for it to achieve this configuration
