In writing the complete ionic equation for the reaction (if any) that occurs when aqueous solutions of KOH and Mg(NO3)2 are mixed, which of the following would not be written as ionic species? A) KOH B) Mg(NO3)2 C) Mg(OH)2 D) KNO3 E) All of the above would be written as ionic species.
They are all Ionic species because they all contain a metal and a nonmetal
But the answer key say its C) Mg(OH)2
I just dont know the reason why thats the anwer
perhaps I'm not understanding the question
I think it asking that after u write the ionic formula which int one of the species tht is in the eqution after it dissosiates
Well we get the reaction 2KOH + 1Mg(NO3)2 -> Mg(OH)2+ 2KNO3 hmm maybe Mg(OH)2 is not soluble
I think MgOH2 might precipitate from solution
hence why we wouldn't write it as an ionic species
Oh yeh it is insoluble b/c most OH- r insoluble except for thoe containing Group 1A cation n NH4+
interesting
Is tht the reason tht it cnt be written as an ionic
Do u mind helping me with another problem if i post it?
yes, because when it is in solid form they are stuck together, when in solution they can be charged species stabilized by the intermolecular interactions of water
I might be able to but I'm pretty busy atm to be honest, trying to get through a cell bio 2 lecture
ok no problem. Good luck.
But yeah link me to your problem and I will have a look
