Optimization Problem A poster of total area 256 in2 is to have a margin of 4 inches at the top and bottom and 1 inch at each side. (a) Find the dimensions of the poster which give the largest printed area. I got: 32 height in; 8 width in But I'm having trouble with this part. (b) Suppose that, instead, we know the poster will contain 256 in2 of printed material with margins of 4 inches at the top and bottom and 1 inch at each side. Find the dimensions of the poster that minimize its total size. height in width in
Okay I was pm the right track I guess. I mean our notation is different. I think I see where I went wrong. I had 256/(x+2) for some reason.
instead of your (256/x +2)
can you explain to me why you set up the A(total) equation as (256/x +2) rather than the way I did it?
yeah i said that in the question
sorry!
cool :) and now that I look at my steps for part a, we did the same thing!
LOL no
No I checked A. It's right
32 by 8
They all are
but now it doesn't include the margins
it says in the question it still has margins... the only difference between the questiion is that for thefirst you're maximizing the printed area and B) you are maximizing the total size
or does it?
omg really? I thought they were changing how you used the margins
UGHHH
nope =] soo you have constraint : \[256=L_t*W_t\] \[\frac{256}{W_t}=L_t\] mustfind this* \[A_p=L_p*W_p\] we need to figure a way right the extra parts due to margin
