What would the formula be for Mercuric chromate? I got Hg2(CrO4)2 but I'm not sure if it's correct.

So since we have an "ic" here we have the higher charge for mercury (2+) chromate has a 2- charge....so HgCrO4 would be its formula

Why wouldn't it have the extra valences outside?

because the formula is always on the lowest terms, you wouldnt write water as H4O2 would you? :)
