Indicate the number of unpaired electrons for each: [noble gas] ns2np5 [noble gas] ns2(n-1)d2 [noble gas] ns2(n-1)d10np1 [noble gas] ns2(n-2)f6

OpenStudy (preetha):

The basic rule is that electrons will go into orbitals of equal energy unpaired. There are 3 p orbitals. So s2p5 would have 1 unpaired e. There are 5 d orbitals, so you would have 2 unpaired electrons, one in the first d orbital and one in the second. You can get the rest.
