What is the electron configuration of an electrically neutral atom of neon?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at how many electrons are in neon, then find the sublevels how many shells they fill. Like the first would be s^2 Because it fills shell S with exactly 2 electrons. Try and do the rest.

i dnt get it

OpenStudy (preetha):

Well, take a look at the periodic table. http://www.webelements.com. Now group 1 starts with an electron in the s orbital, (2s1) then group 2 has 2 s electrons (2s2), then you have 2p1, p2... all the way to Neon with p6. So Neon is 2s2 2p6.
