Fun Lanes Bowling charges a fee of $4 to use their shoes and $6 for each game played. Salim wants to figure out how much it will cost him to bowl. Part 1: Write an equation representing this problem. Let x be the number of games bowled, and let y be the total cost. Part 2: Is x the dependent variable or the independent variable? Using complete sentences, explain how you know.

part 1: lets look at it like we actually want to play a couple games. If we want to play one game, we know we are going to have to rent shoes and pay for one game. So our total = 4+6. if we want to play two games, our total would be 4+6+6. you can see how we keep adding six each time that we play another game. since the 4 is staying the same we know we can just put it into our equation. so lets look at this again.

when we want to play one game, we have 4+6(1) for two games we have 4+6(2) for three games it's 4+6(3) and so on and so on. so our total (y) is going to look like this: y=4+6(x) where x is the number of games bowled

part 2: following directly from what we saw before, we can see that our total is going to depend on how many games we play. this tells us that 'y' is our dependent variable because it changes depending on what x is . this means that x is our independent variable.

well, look at it like this: if someone were to ask you what number y was, you would probably say you didn't know, it depends on what x is. if someone asked you what x was, you could tell them that it was whatever they wanted it to be. ....that's probably not a better explanation huh?
